In Germany, this most common cancer in male is newly diagnosed annually in about 58,000 men. In more than 90% of cases, early stages of the disease can be detected and therfore cured with targeted preventive examinations. Unfortunately, only about 17% of men currently participate in the prevention programs.
The combination of PSA-test, palpation test and a special ultrasound examination through the rectum provides the highest degree of safety for early detection. The examinations are painless and take only a few minutes. If they lead to the suspicion of cancer, tissue samples taken from the prostate provide a reliable diagnosis. The pathologist examines the tissue sample for the presence of tumor cells. The pathological findings, the PSA value and the examination findings of the physician form the basis for the necessity, type and extent of the possibly necessary treatment.
